Wireless Guitar Hero Controller on a PC

Over Thanksgiving, I played Guitar Hero III with my 15 year old cousin… what a blast. But, I don’t have an xbox360, nor a playstation, nor a wii. Turns out there is an open-source thingamabob called FretsOnFire, and although it’s less flashy, and a bit buggy, it satisfied the craving. You can even import the original songs from Guitar Hero, which is cool. I put it on my mythbox under the game menu.

However, using a PC keyboard for a geek-tar just isn’t as fun as one of the guitar-shaped controllers, so I went on a quest. I don’t normally shop at Walmart out of principle, but they had what looked like immediate gratification: a cheap controller called the Shredder, and a cheap playstation to USB adapter, the Futime FT8192.

Well, karma bit me. The combination was flakey, with spurious keypresses coming through when no key were pressed, and long notes wouldn’t sustain.

So, I tried an actual controller from Activision, the wireless SG. Even worse this time. Can’t get any link between the guitar and the dongle.

So, ordered another cheapo adapter from amazon this time; hopefully it’ll work. If not I’ll give up & just buy a wired one; the wired SG looks cool, though probably a usb controller for the xbox360 like the x-plorer would be my best bet.
